Quite true, it has never been an official psychological diagnosis. But it is a phrase that is 1) recognized in general conversation and 2) a shorthand way to describe "that thing," a sometimes puzzling thing, that we see, when people act not in their own best interests. So, I do find it a useful shorthand to refer to a complex and sometimes mysterious phenomenon. But yes, you are certainly right, it is not an official thing.
