I do get it when a trans person says they want respect. Of course they do. And they deserve respect. But, women also deserve respect, girls deserve respect, children deserve respect, parents deserve respect, religious beliefs deserve respect. Everybody deserves respect, if they are otherwise basically polite and respectful people themselves. It doesn’t seem very helpful, to my thinking, for trans folk to insist that you are only showing them respect if you disrespect the feelings of others. Am I missing something in the sequence of logic? If this person were being threatened, assaulted, or under threat of losing their job, I would stand right by their side, to fight for them and to defend them. But where you pee? Really? That is how you measure whether you are being “respected”? I apologize, I truly do, if there is something I am not getting, something I am not understanding. I’m not worldly wise, and don’t even pretend to be, so I may well be very ignorant of very many things. But if the only way trans see to achieve the respect they want is to disrespect people who are doing them no harm….well, good luck with that strategy.
