Applause to you for making the point about the complexity of sexuality. Once I accepted the fact of my own bisexuality (I don’t mind that particular label, since I view it as a spectrum anyway), which self-acceptance I arrived at very late in life, I started reading more about concepts like sexual fluidity. More and more studies are showing that for a very large number of women (perhaps a majority of women?) their sexual orientation actually shifts and flows over the course of their life. I can’t speak to the experience of men, as I have only been looking at research done upon women, but it seems there is more and more evidence that women’s sexuality sits upon a spectrum, and moves up and down that spectrum over the course of a woman’s life, so does not always stay static, and neatly divided into the 3 “official” categories of lesbian, bi, hetero. Anecdotally, this has been born out for me since I can’t tell you how many times when speaking to women friends about sexuality, I hear them say something like this: “I’m heterosexual. Definitely. Oh, but I’ve had sex with a woman before….” Uh-huh. Makes me chuckle every time, since they don’t even seem to realize they just technically contradicted themselves. Yes indeed, sexuality is very complex, isn’t it? Maybe we all should just settle upon saying that the Human Animal is a Sexual Animal, and just call it all good, eh?
