Although I have always loved Edith Wharton's works (particularly Summer and House of Mirth), I was not aware of this one. Thank you for alerting me to it.

I have often felt Wharton does not get quite the credit she deserves from modern audiences, more attention being paid to the slightly more conventional authors of the time period. Perhaps it was the underlying darkness in human society which Wharton was never afraid to spotlight--but which leaves behind an uneasiness and generally unpleasant feeling in the reader--and thus she is not as talked about. To read anything from Wharton is to squirm with discomfort.

Modern readers, I think, would be well-served to revisit her. Her commentaries (often brutally frank) on the flaws and failings of human beings are as applicable today as they ever were.

Thanks for bringing to my attention Twilight Sleep. Adding it to my reading list.
